Dedicated to the Fontinettes Boat Lift in Arques
Historic Monument
You are standing at the foot of a historic monument: the Fontinettes Boat Lift, the only boat lift in France. It connects the River Aa and the River Lys via the Neuffossé Canal.

A Journey Through Time
At the heart of our interpretation center, discover how this structure—now a listed historic monument—operated. Travel back to 1967 with Jacques, the last caretaker of the boat lift, who shares his daily life on his final day of work.
Your journey begins in the Forge, then continues into the Machine Room. It was here that workers manufactured and repaired the essential parts needed to keep the lift running smoothly.

Mechanical Genius
Outside, a path leads you to the archives room. Scale models, documents, and 3D renderings unveil the secrets behind the engineering of this unique monument.

An Immersion Aboard the Barge
Relive the 1888 inauguration with Jacques and the passage of the first boats through the structure. At the end of the quay, a barge ready to enter the Boat Lift opens its doors to you for an immersive experience into the life of boatmen, past and present, guided by Hélène, a bargewoman from the 1960s.

Relax by the Water
End your visit on the boat lift’s peninsula, an ideal spot for relaxation. A picnic area, views over the Neuffossé Canal, and the regular passage of barges and leisure boats await you.
